COMPREHENSIBILITY

How well can others understand you when you speak and write in French?  Comprehensibility relies on a variety of factors, including (but not limited to!) your pronunciation, spelling, word choice, word order, and verb usage.
Here are some ideas for how to improve your comprehensibility:
  • In speaking:
    • listen closely in class to how your teacher pronounces words
    • listen to the pronunciation of vocab words as you study Quizlet flashcards
    • listen to French music and watch French TV shows or movies to improve your fluency
    • watch the videos below that explain the rules of French pronunciation and spelling
    • look up words on Forvo.com to hear their pronunciation from a variety of speakers
  • In writing:
    • use the spelling function in Quizlet to practice spelling of vocab words
    • practice writing out your vocab words and verify their spelling in the unit packet
    • look up the spelling of new words on WordReference.com
    • study class materials to verify word order when you write sentences and questions
